Why Choose a Fixed-Blade Knife?

Fixed-blade knives remain popular with hunters and outdoorsmen because of their simplicity.

There are no hinges or locking mechanisms involved. A well-designed fixed blade provides a solid connection between the blade and handle and can be built around the particular tasks it is expected to perform.

For hunting, camping, and general outdoor work, that simplicity can be a major advantage.

Choosing the Right Blade Size

Bigger isn't automatically better.

A large knife can provide additional reach and leverage, but a more moderately sized blade often provides better control for detailed work.

Many QuickHatch designs fall around the four- to five-inch blade range because that size provides a useful compromise between control, versatility, and capability.

Different models are designed around different jobs, so blade size should always be considered along with the intended use.

Steel and Heat Treatment

Blade steel receives a lot of attention, but steel alone doesn't determine how a knife performs.

Heat treatment and blade geometry are equally important.

O1 tool steel is used extensively in QuickHatch knives. Many of my blades are heat treated to approximately 59–60 HRC.

O1 is a carbon tool steel, so it does require normal maintenance to protect it from corrosion, but it remains an excellent choice for a hard-working outdoor knife.

A Comfortable Handle Is Important

A hunting knife may be used when hands are wet, cold, or tired.

That makes handle design extremely important.

I shape QuickHatch handles with actual use in mind. A good handle should provide control without creating unnecessary pressure points during prolonged use.

Durable materials such as Micarta are particularly well suited to working knives because they offer stability and a practical feel.

Even when two knives are built from the same design, small differences in handle material, liners, hardware, and finishing make each one individual.
